The law on working time (The Working Time Regulations 1998) sets rules for: the maximum weekly working hours, and how someone can work more hours if they choose; rest during the working day, week and year – find out more about the right to rest; young workers' maximum working hours and rest breaks; night work

Employees who work more than six hours in a day are entitled to a minimum of 20 minutes’ uninterrupted rest break. For those working over 4.5 hours, a 15-minute break is required. Employees working a continuous shift of more than 11 hours are entitled to a one-hour break.

Additionally, the working time directive rules set limits to how many night shifts you can work in a row in the UK. The Working Hour Regulations (WTR 1998) set the maximum working hours UK employers must follow for employees’ workweek length as well as the maximum working per day.

If someone works more than 6 hours in a day, they have the right to a rest break of at least 20 minutes. These rest breaks should be: planned in advance; taken during the working day, not at the start or end of the day; If they work more than 6 hours, there's no automatic right to more breaks.
