  2. The Projections and Transformations toolset contains tools for converting geographic data between coordinate systems. There are additional tools for transforming raster datasets, such as shift, rescale, and rotate. When you obtain GIS data, it often needs to be transformed or projected.

    When you use the Project tool, you input data so the tool can convert it from its current coordinate system to another. The tool performs three things as part of this process: It unprojects the data into geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude). It transforms the geographic coordinates into the new geographic coordinate system.

    Use the Project tool to project vector data or the Project Raster tool to project raster data. The transformation that is applied is the optimal one based on its accuracy and the extent of the data, but you can specify a different transformation if necessary. You can also save additional transformations with the map for later use.
