Causes of non-cancerous (benign) lung nodules include:

    • Infection - Infection can cause inflammation leading to formation of a granuloma, small lesions in the lungs.
    • Non-infectious inflammation caused by conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, sarcoidosis, granulomatous polyangitis
    • Non-cancerous growths such as:

Hamartomas - tumors formed by the tissue from lung’s lining and tissues such as fat and cartilage

Bronchial adenomas – group of tumors formed from mucous glands and ducts of the windpipe or large airways of lungs.

Benign tumors made of connective tissue or fatty tissue such as chondromas, fibromas, or lipomas

    • Cancerous Growth such as Adenocarcinoma , Squamous cell carcinoma

Risk factors for benign lung nodules vary depending on the cause. Whereas for cancerous nodules it may include

    • Smoking
    • Having a family history of cancer
    • Age-more common in age 60 and older

    Diagnosis

    Verified Expert
One or more of these tests may be recommended by your medical provider.
Diagnosis is based on imaging test results.

    Common tests & procedures

X-ray: The nodule will show up as a spot or shadow on the X-ray.

CT scan: It gives more clear images of the nodules.

Biopsy: This is done by collecting a small portion of lung tissue for further examination.

Bronchoscopy: This procedure involves a tube which has a camera inserted into the lung to view the nodules, which gives a clear view of the nodules.

PET-CT Scan: This procedure involve using radio-tracer and helps to differentiate metabolically active lesions like cancerous from non-metabolically active lesions.
