  2. A carbohydrate (/ ˌkɑːrboʊˈhaɪdreɪt /) is a biomolecule consisting of carbon (C), hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O) atoms, usually with a hydrogen–oxygen atom ratio of 2:1 (as in water) and thus with the empirical formula Cm(H2O)n (where m may or may not be different from n), which does not mean the H has covalent bonds with O (for example with CH2O, H has a covalent bond with C but not with O).

Carbohydrates are chemical compounds that contain only oxygen, hydrogen and carbon. They are made up of joined-up sugars. Sugars have the general formula C m (H 2 O) n, and are also known as saccharides. Certain carbohydrates are an important storage and transport form of energy in most organisms, including plants and animals.

Carbohydrates are formed by green plants from carbon dioxide and water during the process of photosynthesis. They serve as energy sources and as essential structural components in organisms; in addition, part of the structure of nucleic acids, which contain genetic information, consists of carbohydrate.

Carbohydrates (literally hydrates of carbon) are chemical compounds, which together with proteins, lipids (fats), and nucleic acids (RNA / DNA), constitute the 4 principal biological macromolecules of which all life on Earth is composed. Together with lipids, carbohydrates are the primary means by which living organisms store energy.
