  2. Civitavecchia has ancient origins, dating back to the Etruscan civilization. The city was known as Centumcellae during the Roman period, and it served as an important port for Rome, allowing for trade and communication with other regions. Over the centuries, the city was fortified to protect it from pirate attacks and other invasions.

The town flourished during late Roman times, but it was attacked by the Vandals and destroyed by the Saracens in 828. The people fled to the Allumiere Mountains, where a walled town was constructed by Pope Leo IV in 854. Later, the inhabitants returned to the old site (hence the name Civitavecchia, meaning “old city”).

The ancient port town of Civitavecchia lies north west of Rome in the Lazio region of Italy. Originally, it was a small port named ‘Centum Cellae’ that was built up by Emperor Trajan. Trajan was one of the five ‘great’ emperors who led the Roman Empire in the conquering of many areas in central Europe to great success.

The town was originally conceived by order of Roman Emperor Traiano (sometimes known as Trajan), just under two millennia ago. The place was then constructed to give Rome a fully equipped port. Long after the Roman Empire collapsed, it was conquered in 828 by the Saracens and transformed into a military base.

According to scholars, the town was built on an early Etruscan settlement. The harbor itself was built by Emperor Trajan in the 2nd century. In the Middle Ages the port was captured by the Byzantines, in 828 it was dominated by the Saracens, and after that, the port became a part of the Papal States.
