Bush to succeed Thurgood Marshall, and has served since 1991. Thomas is the second African-American to serve on the Court, after Marshall.

He chaired the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) 1982–90 and was a judge on the US Court of Appeals before being nominated to replace Thurgood Marshall on the Court.
