Usage of the word hierarchydates back a considerable time. It seems to have been coined by Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite (6thcentury AD). It is made up of hieros“sacred” and arkhia“rule”. The first clear meaning arises from this etymology, since hierarchy at that time is “the governance of things sacred”.
