OSHA’s standard (1910.145) regulates safety signs and tags for incident prevention. The standard covers three safety sign types and references ANSI standards Z53.1-1967 and Z535.1-2006 (R2011). The three main classifications of signs regulated by OSHA are:
    • Danger Signs: These are signs that warn people of specific dangers or hazards.
    • Caution Signs: Caution signs are used to warn of potential hazards or to encourage caution against certain known unsafe practices.
    • Safety Instruction Signs: These are to be used when there is a need to convey general instructions or even suggestions concerning safety.
In 2017, OSHA adopted the updated ANSI Z535-2011 (R2017) standard, which defines layouts that more clearly and comprehensively identifies hazards and polices than previous layouts. These updated layouts include a safety header like “danger” or “caution,” a text legend, and symbols or pictograms. This layout applies to signs, labels, and tags.
