    French-born Pierre Laclède Liguest arrived in New Orleans in 1755. He ventured up the Mississippi in 1763 to build a trading post after his firm won trading rights in the upper Louisiana Territory. Choosing a site near the mouth of the Missouri, he sent his stepson, Auguste Chouteau, to start the settlement in February 1764.

    In 1778, Pierre Laclede died during a return trip up the Mississippi River to St. Louis from New Orleans. It is believed that he was buried in an unmarked grave at the mouth of the Arkansas River. Marie and Pierre had four children who were baptized into the Catholic church as "Chouteau".

    After dissolving his partnership with Maxent in 1769, Laclede and Chouteau entered a business partnership with Sylvester Labbadie. Declining in health, Laclede returned to New Orleans in 1777 to settle debts. He died in 1778 on his return route to St. Louis, buried in an unmarked grave along the Mississippi River.
