Scott has received various awards and nominations including four Academy Award nominations including three nominations for Best Director for Thelma & Louise (1991), Gladiator (2000), and Black Hawk Down (2002). He also received a nomination for Best Picture for The Martian (2015).

One of our generation's finest filmmakers, Ridley began his career as a set designer for the BBC in the 60's. He soon became a television director working on such Brit shows as Z Cars (1962) . He soon began his own company and showed his talent in directing innovative commercials in the 70's.

Gladiator was nominated for a number of Oscars, winning quite a few in the process. The Ridley Scott swords-and-sandals epic, which starred Russell Crowe as Maximus, premiered in 2000 and instantly became a hit with both critics and audiences.

Scott has been nominated for three Academy Awards for Directing, plus two Golden Globe and two BAFTA Awards. In 2003, Scott was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace for his "services to the British film industry".
