Address mapping in computer networks is a crucial process that involves translating logical addresses (IP addresses) to physical addresses (MAC addresses) and vice versa. This translation is essential for data communication within and across networks. Several protocols and mechanisms are used for address mapping, each serving a specific purpose.

    Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)

ARP is used to map a known IP address to a MAC address. When a device wants to communicate with another device on the same local network, it needs to know the MAC address of the destination device. If the MAC address is not known, the device sends an ARP broadcast request to all devices on the network, asking for the MAC address associated with the given IP address. The device with the matching IP address responds with its MAC address, allowing the communication to proceed12.
