Alvars and Nayanars were Tamil poet-saints who played an essential role in propagating the Bhakti Movement during the 5th – 10th centuries.

    Nayanars (Shiva Devotees) and Alvars (Vishnu Devotees), two significant Bhakti saint groups in South India, rejected Buddhist and Jain austerities in favour of preaching devotion to God as a means of salvation. The majority of their poetry focused on the bond of devotion between the worshipper and God.
