Balázs’s theoretical work Halálesztétika (“The Aesthetics of Death”) was published in 1906; his first drama, Doktor Szélpál Margit, was performed by the Hungarian National Theatre in 1909.

His German-language theoretical essays on film date from the mid-1920s to the mid-1930s, the period of his early exile in Vienna and Berlin.
