The Buffalo Soldiers were African-American troops who fought in over 100 significant military engagements as America pushed ever westward. They were stationed at Texas forts stretching from the Panhandle to the Valley. The nickname "Buffalo Soldiers" was given by Indians, who thought that the tightly curled hair of the black soldiers resembled the curly hair on a bison's face. They arrived at Fort Davis in 1867 when western Texas was still very open to attack by raiding Apaches and Comanches, and left in 1885 when peaceful travel and settlement prevailed in much of the region. They overcame prejudice from within the army and from the frontier communities they were stationed in, to compile an outstanding service record. They constructed roads, telegraph lines, and forts, and provided escort for the transport of goods, mail, and people.
