Compartment syndrome is a condition in which pressure in a certain compartment is increased and can be diagnosed on measuring the compartment pressure. Although ultrasound and MRI can be helpful in diagnosing certain cases of compartment syndrome, X-ray or ultrasound are not of much help in the diagnosis of the condition as minimal or no changes can be seen on imaging.

A tear in the deep surface of gastrocnemius may be seen as a disruption in contour and echogenicity of muscle fibers. A torn plantaris tendon may also be identified.
