The Crow tribe has an origin story that traces back to a land of many lakes, possibly in Canada's Lake Winnipeg area. Historians believe they originated before 1300 at the headwaters of the Mississippi River and were part of the Hidatsa tribe. They later broke away from the Hidatsa and migrated westward, settling in what is now Montana around the 16th century. The Crow people were primarily nomadic, following the bison herds on the Great Plains.
