  2. Cylindrical projections are used for areas near the equator and for the entire earth but with very large distortions. Conical projections are good for areas near the mid-latitudes including the contiuous 48 states of the United States. Azimuthal (or planar) are good for areas near the poles.

When the cylinder is cut open, it provides a cylindrical projection on the plane sheet. A Conical projection is drawn by wrapping a cone round the globe and the shadow of graticule network is projected on it. When the cone is cut open, a projection is obtained on a flat sheet.

Different ways of projecting can be produced by surrounding the globe in a cylindrical fashion, as a cone, or even as a flat surface. Each of these methods produces what is called a map projection family. Therefore, there is a family of planar projections, a family of cylindrical projections, and another called conical projections (see Fig. 8.3)

  4. The Three Main Families of Map Projections

A cylindrical projection is produced by wrapping a cylinder around a globe representing the Earth. The map projection is the image of the globe projected onto the cylindrical surface, which is then unwrapped into a flat surface. When …

The Earth's reference surface projected on a map wrapped around the globe as a cylinder produces a cylindrical map projection. Projected on a map formed into a cone gives a conical map projection. When projected directly onto the …

  10. 31 Map Projection: Concept and classification

As with planar projections, the conical aspect may be polar, equatorial, or oblique. Theses have been shown in the following figure. It has been assumed that the center, the pole and the vertex of the cone are in a straight line. The …

There are three main categories of map projection, those in which projection is directly onto a flat plane, those onto a cone sitting on the sphere that can be unwrapped, and other onto a cylinder around the sphere that can be unrolled …

  12. How Map Projections Work - GIS Geography

When you place a cone on the Earth and unwrap it, this results in a conic projection. For example, the Albers Equal Area Conic and the Lambert Conformal Conic projections are conic projections. Both of these map …
