Deimos has a mean radius of 6.2 km (3.9 mi) and takes 30.3 hours to orbit Mars. [ 5 ] Deimos is 23,460 km (14,580 mi) from Mars, much farther than Mars's other moon, Phobos. [ 12 ]

As the moon revolves, the debris is redeposited as a dusty layer on its surface. Deimos has a thick regolith, perhaps as deep as 328 feet (100 meters), formed as meteorites pulverized the surface. Deimos is a dark body that appears to be composed of C-type surface materials, similar to that of asteroids found in the outer asteroid belt.

Like Phobos, Deimos has characteristics that make it similar to a C-type asteroid. It is not a spherical moon. Deimos has a much smoother surface than Phobos, although it does have some craters. The two largest are named Swift and Voltaire, after 19th century writers. Deimos has a nearly circular orbit around Mars.

Deimos was discovered by Asaph Hall at the United States Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C., on 12 August 1877, at about 07:48 UTC. Hall, who also discovered Phobos shortly afterwards, had been specifically searching for Martian moons at the time. See more

Deimos's orbit is nearly circular and is close to Mars's equatorial plane. Deimos is possibly an asteroid that was perturbed by Jupiter into an orbit that allowed it to be captured by Mars, though this hypothesis is still controversial and disputed. Both Deimos and … See more
