  2. Diborane or B2H6 forms covalent bonds and are also known as three centres and two-electron bonds. In the diborane molecule, two types of H atoms are present, which are the hydrogen terminal atoms which form covalent bonds with B that are normally two centres and two-electron bonds.

The two electrons (corresponding to one bond) in a B−H−B bonding molecular orbital are spread out across three internuclear spaces. In diborane (B 2 H 6), there are two such 3c-2e bonds: two H atoms bridge the two B atoms, leaving two additional H atoms in ordinary B−H bonds on each B.

Hydrogen atoms involved in (3c-2e) bonds are the bridging H atoms i.e., H atoms in two B – H – B bonds. In diborane, two B atoms and four-terminal H atoms lie in one plane, while the two bridging H atoms lie symmetrically above and below this plane.
