ASCII defines 128 characters, which map to the numbers 0–127. Unicode defines (less than) 221 characters, which, similarly, map to numbers 0–221 (though not all numbers are currently assigned, and some are reserved).

Unicode is a superset of ASCII, and the numbers 0–127 have the same meaning in ASCII as they have in Unicode. For example, the number 65 means "Latin capital 'A'".

Because Unicode characters don't generally fit into one 8-bit byte, there are numerous ways of storing Unicode characters in byte sequences, such as UTF-32 and UTF-8.

Is ASCII a subset of Unicode?
For backward compatibility, the first 128 Unicode characters point to ASCII characters. And since UTF-8 encodes each of those characters using 1-byte. ASCII is essentially just UTF-8, or we can say that ASCII is a subset of Unicode. Vice versa isn’t true.
Are ASCII and Unicode the same encoding?
For example: "ASCII and Unicode are two character encodings". No! They are characters sets. "...they are standards on how to represent difference characters in binary". No! Unicode says nothing about how characters are represented in binary.
Should I use Unicode or ASCII characters?
In most modern applications you should prefer to use Unicode strings rather than ASCII. This will for example allow you to have users with accented characters in their name or address, and to localize your interface to languages other than English. But how do i use unicode characters?
Why is Unicode more flexible than ASCII?
Because Unicode can represent characters from different languages and scripts, it is a more flexible and versatile encoding scheme than ASCII. Most modern computer systems use Unicode encoding schemes, allowing for the creation and use of software and applications that support multiple languages and character sets.
