  2. When a measurement of a property is carried out, the wavefunction "collapses" to one of the state with a defined value for that property, and the measurement corresponding to that particular state is observed. A system in a superposition of states 1, 3, 5, and 6 might collapse to state 3.

No, it doesn't collapse to an eigenstate. Collapse to an eigenstate is a picture of an ideal measurement. In general the final state will not be describable by a wave function, because it's not a pure state, it is instead a mixed state.

    Wave function collapse - Wikipedia

In quantum mechanics, wave function collapse, also called reduction of the state vector, occurs when a wave function—initially in a superposition of several eigenstates—reduces to a single eigenstate due to interaction with the external world. This interaction is called an observation, and is the essence of a … See more

    1927
The concept of wavefunction collapse was introduced by Werner Heisenberg in his 1927 paper on the uncertainty principle
    1932
John von Neumann incorporated the concept of wavefunction collapse into the mathematical formulation of quantum mechanics in his 1932 treatise Mathematische Grundlagen der Quantenmechanik.
    1957
Hugh Everett III proposed a model of quantum mechanics that dropped von Neumann's first postulate in 1957.
    1970
    H. Dieter Zeh sought a detailed quantum decoherence model for the discontinuous change without postulating collapse in 1970.
    1980
Further work by Wojciech H. Zurek in 1980 lead eventually to a large number of papers on many aspects of the concept.
