  2. Nystagmus
    • According to 3 sources
Nystagmus is a condition in which the dog's eyeballs move involuntarily and rhythmically. The movement of eyeballs can be up and down or side to side. Nystagmus is one of the symptoms of vestibular disease, a condition related to the vestibular system that ensures body balance. It could be a problem inside the pet's ear or brain.
Nystagmus is nearly always caused by a problem in the vestibular system which is located in the inner ear and brain. The vestibular system controls your dog’s balance – telling your dog if they are standing up straight, upside down, or falling over. When there is a problem with the vestibular system, this is known as vestibular disease.
Nystagmus is a medical term that describes when your dog’s eyes move rapidly and uncontrollably. They can move up and down or in a circle, but most commonly seen is side-to-side movement. Nystagmus, in and of itself, is not a disease but rather a symptom of an underlying problem with the vestibular system, which controls balance.
