Dungeon Master's Book: One thing I'll note up front - if you're mainly interested in rules, you don't need both this and the 4th Edition Rules Compendium, as there's an awful lot of overlap between the two. The main difference is that the DM's Book goes into more detail than the Rules Compendium - almost obsessively so, at times - and provides a lot of tips for running the game. Some of these tips would be applicable to any version of D&D - or any role-playing game, really - and provide some pretty useful ideas for structuring adventures and campaigns. Most of the advice, however, is specific to running this specific edition, with its specific assumptions, particularly that the focus of the game is on encounters - and if that's kind of game you want to run, this book will be extremely useful. If you're looking for advice that's more on the storytelling side, it's in here too, but it's definitely not the emphasis. Beyond the rules and advice for running the game, the DM's Book also includes an overview of 4th Edition's default Nentir Vale setting, and a number of specific examples of game elements, such as fantastic terrains (interesting but often very video game-y), traps (very good range of options provided), and magic items (a small and mostly just functional selection, honestly underwhelming).
