Discovered by a Washington orchardist in 1990, Early Robin is a large yellow cherry with a reddish blush. This heart-shaped cherry has a sweet flavor that makes it an ideal choice for fancy desserts, or for snacking by the handful.

All sour cherry trees are self-pollinating, including: Balaton Pie Cherry, Early Richmond Sour Cherry, North Star Pie Cherry, Stark Montmorency Pie Cherry, and Stark Surecrop Pie Cherry.

The two basic cherry tree types are those that yield sweet cherries that can be eaten immediately picked off the tree and sour cherry or baking cherries. Both cherry tree types ripen early and are ready for harvest in the late spring.

Early Varieties. They are considered early cherries, those that are harvested before the Burlat Cherry, known to be one of the main ones in Europe, and one of the early varieties par excellence. Cavalier. This early-ripening cherry has a dark red fruit that is medium size, firm and high quality.

Some of the earliest cherry tree varieties to ripen include the Tioga and Weather King cherries. These cherries can be harvested as early as July, allowing gardeners in cooler climates to enjoy fresh cherries within a few months of planting.
