The ecliptic coordinate system is used to describe the position of celestial objects in the sky. The ecliptic is the projection of the Earth's orbit on the celestial sphere, and is described by the path taken by the sun during the year. The ecliptic and equator cross at two points 180° apart due to the inclination of the Earth's rotation axis to the orbital plane. There are two principal variants of the ecliptic coordinate system: geocentric and heliocentric. Celestial longitude is measured in degrees east from the vernal equinox along the ecliptic, and celestial latitude is measured in degrees north or south from the ecliptic to the ecliptic poles. The ecliptic coordinate system undergoes a slow, continuous turning westward about the poles of the ecliptic due to precession, completing one circuit in about 26,000 years.
