Lip repair surgery: Carried out when the child is about three months old. Cuts are made on both sides of the cleft and the flaps are stitched together.

Palate repair surgery: The gap in the roof of the mouth is closed and the surrounding muscles are repositioned.

Ear tube insertion: Muscles in the palate are connected to the middle ear. Fluid may build up in the ear, a tube is placed to drain it.

Speech and physical therapy:Carried out to correct speech disabilities.

• Visit the dentist and ENT specialist regularly and get treatments as required.

Foods to eat while pregnant:

• Foods rich in folic acid (vitamin B) – leafy vegetables, beans, whole grains
• Spoon feeding or bottle feeding is recommended before surgery.
• Avoid giving foods that may cause irritation such as spicy or acidic foods, and hard foods such as nuts or pop corn.
