The law of negative exponents states that, when a number is raised to a negative exponent, we divide 1 by the base raised to a positive exponent. The general formula of this rule is: a -m = 1/a m and (a/b) -n = (b/a) n. There are some basic rules for solving negative exponents:
    • a−n = 1/an = 1/a × 1/a × ….. ×n times
    • a -n = 1/a n = 1/a × 1/a × ….. × n times, where n is a positive integer
    • If there is a negative exponent in the denominator, the rule is the same as above.
    • If the exponent is positive, work with it as you would a regular exponent, but remember two things: 1) If the base is negative and the exponent is an even number, the final product will always be a positive number. 2) If the base is negative and the exponent is an odd number, the final product will always be a negative number.
