The first French settlement in Canada was established by Samuel de Champlain in 1608 in what is now Quebec City. Prior to that, in 1604, French settlers had established the colony of Acadia around the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Another early French settlement was Port-Royal (now Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia), founded in 1605. However, the oldest French settlement in North America is considered to be the site opposite Goat Island in the Annapolis Basin, Nova Scotia. Jacques Cartier's exploration in 1534–35 also contributed to the French presence in the region.
