Throughout history, names and mythical stories have been attributed to the star patterns, giving birth to what is now known as constellations. The International Astronomical Union lists 88 constellations—48 of which were recorded by Greek astronomer Claudius Ptolemy during the 2nd century.

Astraea was an important goddess in Greek mythology. She is referred to as the Star Goddess or Star Maiden, but she is most recognized as having been the last immortal to have lived on Earth among the humans. She eventually left due to the disgust of humanity’s wickedness and brutality. No one knows for sure who her parents are.

Constellation names associated with figures from mythology include most of the members of the Perseus family, the Hercules family, the Orion family, the Zodiac family and the Ursa Major family. There is also the Heavenly waters constellation family from old Mesopotamia traditions.
