There are many reasons why a mother’s breast milk supply can be low. Sometimes it can take several days after birth for a mother’s milk to come in, in which case patience is all that is required. Sometimes a mother’s supply can be low because the baby isn’t spending enough time at the breast, in which case putting the baby to breast more often, and pumping the breasts (preferably with an electric breast pump) can help to increase supply. Women who have breast reduction surgery may have difficulty with breastfeeding, and should call their doctors for advice. Sometimes the reason is less clear; in those cases, mothers should try increasing their fluid intake, getting rest whenever possible and using a breast pump. There are some herbal and prescription medications that can be helpful, but mothers should always consult with their doctors before trying these.
