  2. Helen Levitt (August 31, 1913 – March 29, 2009) was an American photographer and cinematographer. She was particularly noted for her street photography around New York City. David Levi Strauss described her as "the most celebrated and least known photographer of her time."

Although much of her work documented poor communities against a backdrop of depression or war, Levitt aimed to capture the poetics of everyday life rather than providing political or social commentary. One of the early pioneers of colour street photography, Levitt was one of the first photographers to exhibit her colour work in 1974.
