    The Higgs field is responsible for the electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB). At a critical temperature, the Higgs field develops a vacuum expectation value, and the symmetry is spontaneously broken by tachyon condensation. The W and Z bosons acquire masses as a result of EWSB. The sector in which the electroweak symmetry is broken must contain one or more fundamental scalar Higgs bosons with light masses of the order of the symmetry-breaking scale v ∼246 GeV. The electroweak theory has two massless gauge bosons and two charged Higgses, while the broken theory has two massive gauge bosons.
