The architecture of Liverpool is rooted in the city's development into a major port of the British Empire. The value of Liverpool's architecture and design was recognised in 2004, when several areas throughout the city were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known as the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City, the sites were added in recognition of the city's role in the development of International trade and docking technology. [10]

The Port of Liverpool building was constructed at the very start of the 20th Century. It was the headquarters of Mersey Docks and Harbour Board (MDHB) for 87 years – purpose built for them in fact – until the company relocated to new premises at Seaforth Dock.
