The name Oceania comes from the Greek word okeanos, meaning "ocean", which originated in the 19th century. It was thus named for being a continent composed of thousands of islands scattered across the Pacific Ocean. The name reflects the ocean's importance for the continent in terms of geographical location, culture, and economy.
Oceania has traditionally been divided into four parts: Australasia (Australia and New Zealand), Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. As recently as 33,000 years ago no human beings lived in the region, except in Australasia.
