At the end of the Middle Ages, it was one of four boroughs in Lancashire established by royal charter. The Industrial Revolution saw a dramatic economic expansion and rapid rise in population.

    The name Wigan dates back to around the 7th century, although the area had been conquered by the Romans in the 1st century and was an important settlement to them.
