    • According to 4 sources
Charlemagne (born April 2, 747?—died January 28, 814, Aachen, Austrasia [now in Germany]) was the king of the Franks (768–814), king of the Lombards (774–814), and first emperor (800–814) of the Romans and of what was later called the Holy Roman Empire.
The Holy Roman Emperor's standard designation was "August Emperor of the Romans" (Romanorum Imperator Augustus). When Charlemagne was crowned in 800, he was styled as "most serene Augustus, crowned by God, great and pacific emperor, governing the Roman Empire," thus constituting the elements of "Holy" and "Roman" in the imperial title.
As a way to acknowledge Charlemagne’s power and reinforce his relationship with the church, Pope Leo III crowned Charlemagne emperor of the Romans and first ruler of the vast Holy Roman Empire on December 25, 800, at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
Charlemagne is a looming powerhouse of a historical figure and a notable unifying force. He was a leader reigning during a time of great transition and change in Europe. He was, in succession, King of the Franks, King of the Lombards, and then King of the Holy Roman Empire (otherwise known as the Carolingian Empire).
