In Part Three here, we address how to practically navigate the discussion over gender pronoun use with colleagues at work and school, as well as with authorities who oversee our lives there. We divide this into two sections: What to do when asked to announce your own pronouns and when others request you use theirs.

This is how I understood it! I always say she/her/they as indicating preference - I prefer she or her, but if you aren't sure or can't remember, they/them is perfectly fine as well. I'm not changing my pronouns constantly, but I just feel indifferent between feminine and neutral pronouns.

The key to respecting people who don’t use pronouns is practice. Ask someone to practice gushing about your pronoun-less friend with you. If you have yet to meet a person who uses no pronouns, you can still practice. Pick a name at random, talk about a real person, or talk about a pet, (I promise, pets don’t subscribe to the gender binary).

Should people be asking everyone their pronouns? Or does it depend on the setting? Knowing each other's pronouns helps you be sure you have accurate information about another person.

I started telling people as of two days ago that I'm nonbinary and that I'm okay with any pronouns, but it feels odd to say as I know mostly I'm just going to be referred to as she/her or they/them.
