What advice can one get regarding long covid?

Many people are experiencing fatigue which lasts for several months beyond their Covid infection - it is the most commonly reported long Covid symptom. Here are some simple things you can do when you feel short of breath: Find a comfortable position to help relieve breathlessness. For instance, sitting on a chair leaning forwards, or lying on your side with your head propped up on cushions. Practicing deep breathing techniques can help you to take control of your breathing. Here are a few things you can do to manage the symptoms of brain fog: Take notes to help you remember things, whether during work meetings or medical appointments. You might find it useful to use a note-taking app or the calendar on your smartphone. If you are finding it hard to focus on important tasks, remove distractions by spending time in a quiet place and asking others not to disturb you. Make a clear plan before approaching any new or complicated tasks. Break it down into steps, take regular breaks, and keep checking your plan as you follow it. Exercise regularly, especially the kind that makes you breathe a bit faster and feel a bit warmer. Start gradually and don’t overdo it. Check with your doctor before taking up a new exercise regime. Eat for your brain health. A Mediterranean diet including olive oil, fruits and vegetables, nuts and beans, and whole grains has been proven to improve thinking, memory and brain health. Stick to the recommended alcohol limits or don’t drink at all. Try to get as much sleep as you need. Read more about getting a good night’s sleep. Try to do things that are known to stimulate the brain and improve mental health, such as social activities, learning something new or practising mindfulness. Sometimes this starts when you are ill, but it may continue for many weeks after. Often, muscle and joint pains are worst in the shoulders, neck, back, hips and knees. These tips may help to relieve stiffness and pain as you recover: Practise flexibility exercises like stretching, yoga, pilates or tai chi. You may feel stiff at first, but it helps to keep moving so your muscles and joints stay strong, which can help with pain over time. Light swimming can also be helpful for back pain. As much as you are able to, you can also try gentle strength exercises such as lifting light weights or working with resistance bands. Make sure to build up activity gradually and check with your doctor before starting any new exercises. You can use over-the-counter painkillers or creams to help relieve back or muscle pain - speak to your pharmacist to get advice on your symptoms. If your symptoms are not improving or getting in the way of your daily activities, speak to your GP or physiotherapist for specialist advice. Want to get fit and healthy? Boosting your mood and mental health There is a link between long-term illness and mood change, and long Covid is no different. Many people with long Covid experience changes in their mental health, which can include anxiety and depression. There are many reasons for this. It can take a while to process a significant event like having Covid-19, which can really disrupt your everyday living. The symptoms of long Covid can also make it harder to work, socialise and even sleep, all of which can lead to unwelcome effects on your mental wellbeing. If you notice that your mood is lower than usual, the following tips might help: Be kind to yourself during your recovery and be prepared that some days will be worse than others. Plan what to do each day - a daily routine can create stability, boosting your wellbeing. Try to balance errands and tasks with activities you enjoy, like making your favourite meal. In your routine, include connection with other people, such as family and friends. It can help to open up to others about how you are feeling. Many people experience mental health difficulties at some point in their life, so it’s nothing to feel ashamed or embarrassed about. Keep a diary to help you reflect on how certain activities might be affecting your mood positively or negatively. You could also use it to practice gratitude and positive thinking. Staying active and move as much as you feel able to – not only can movement create a sense of achievement, but it can also trigger the release of endorphins that can boost your mood. Take other steps to maintain a healthy lifestyle, such as eating regular nutritious meals and avoiding heavy alcohol consumption. They may refer you for talking therapy, or you can refer yourself online. Find out more about getting mental health support via the NHS. Sometimes low mood can feel debilitating and lead to distressing thoughts. The Samaritans is a registered charity aimed at providing emotional support to anyone in distress. Their free confidential helpline is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year on 116 123. For more mental health tips, you can read our article on how to deal with uncertainty. Loss of taste or smell during long Covid After having Covid, many people experience a loss or change to their sense of taste or smell. Foods may smell or taste different, or you may experience an unpleasant taste (such as a metallic taste) in your mouth. How long does loss of taste or smell last? It may take time for your sense of taste or smell to recover, and it’s hard to predict how long they will take to return. For some people this can go on for many weeks or months. It can be difficult or frustrating when your favourite foods don’t taste or smell as appetising as normal. Here are a few tips that might help you to cope: Experiment with different flavours, textures and temperatures to see if you can make meals more appetising. Try using different herbs and spices to see which ones you like the most. You might be surprised to find you enjoy different flavours to the ones you did before.
