Thirteen stars surrounding the seal denote Georgia's position as one of the original thirteen colonies. On the seal three pillars supporting an arch represent the three branches of government: legislative, judicial, and executive.

January 1 — The Grand Union flag (Continental Colors) is displayed on Prospect Hill. It has 13 alternate red and white stripes and the British Union Jack in the upper left-hand corner (the canton). 1776

They were flags of protest and petition flown throughout the Thirteen Colonies during the five years prior to the outbreak of the Revolution. They proclaimed loyalty to the Crown, but laid claim on behalf of the colonists to the rights of Englishmen, and called for a union of the colonies against current English colonial policies.

Flags with the word “Liberty” on them came to be called Liberty Flags and were usually flown from Liberty poles. They were flags of protest and petition flown throughout the Thirteen Colonies during the five years prior to the outbreak of the Revolution.

The Thirteen Colonies were a group of British colonies on the Atlantic coast of North America during the 17th and 18th centuries. In the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), they established their independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain as the United States of America.
