    Spiral galaxy - Wikipedia

    • A spiral galaxy is a type of galaxy with a flat, rotating disk of stars, gas and dust, and a central bulge. It has spiral arms that extend from the center into the disk, where star formation occurs. Learn more about the components, classification and examples of spiral galaxies. See more

The Beauty and Mystery of Spiral Galaxies
Galaxies are huge collections of stars, gas, and dust that populate the universe. One of the most common and stunning types of galaxies is the spiral galaxy.
    Structure

Spiral galaxies may consist of several distinct components:
    • A flat, rotating disc of stars and interstellar matter of which spiral arms are prominent components
    • A central stellar bulge of mainly older stars… See more

    Origin of the spiral structure

The pioneer of studies of the rotation of the Galaxy and the formation of the spiral arms was Bertil Lindblad in 1925. He realized that the idea of stars arranged permanently in a spiral shape was untenable. Since the angular sp… See more

Before it was understood that spiral galaxies existed outside of our Milky Way galaxy, they were often referred to as spiral nebulae, due to Lord Rosse, whose telescope Leviathan was the first to reveal the spiral st… See more

    Milky Way

The Milky Way was once considered an ordinary spiral galaxy. Astronomers first began to suspect that the Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy in the 1960s. Their suspicions were confirmed by Spitzer Space Telescope observations … See more

  2. The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy with two major arms and a number of minor arms or spurs. The Perseus Spiral Arm, with a radius of approximately 10.7 kiloparsecs, is located between the minor Cygnus and Carina–Sagittarius Arms. It is named after the Perseus constellation in the direction of which it is seen from Earth.

Using infrared images from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, scientists have discovered that the Milky Way's elegant spiral structure is dominated by just two arms wrapping off the ends of a central bar of stars. Previously, our galaxy was thought to possess four major arms. The annotated artist's concept illustrates the new view of the Milky Way.

This image, assembled from data from NASA’s Spitzer mission, shows that the Milky Way Galaxy has a modest bar in its central regions. Two spiral arms, Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus, emerge from the ends of the bar and wrap around the bulge.
