The cervical spine, or neck region of the spine, consists of seven vertebrae labeled C1 through C7. These vertebrae are smaller and more mobile than those in other parts of the spine, allowing for a wide range of head movements. The first cervical vertebra, C1, is known as the atlas and supports the skull, enabling nodding motions. The second vertebra, C2, called the axis, has a distinctive peg-like structure called the odontoid process, or dens, which allows for the rotation of the head. Vertebrae C3 through C7 progressively increase in size and form the base of the neck's structure. Each cervical vertebra has a vertebral body, a vertebral arch, and transverse processes with foramina, unique to the cervical region, allowing the passage of the vertebral arteries. Intervertebral discs between the vertebrae act as shock absorbers. The spinal cord runs through the central canal of the cervical spine, and spinal nerves exit through the foramina to supply sensation and motor function to the upper body. The cervical spine also includes ligaments, muscles, and tendons that provide stability and support while allowing for flexibility and movement.
