Jan 11, 2024 · To this day I still get a bit stumped by parallelism; for the most part I do well, but I always run into scenarios that have me guessing whether or not my sentences are parallel or not. In regards to my initial example: I always believed that it was faulty parallelism to mix individual words with phrases when listing items or a series.

The only reason this is ungrammatical is faulty parallelism, but it absolutely does not mean that I like eating potatoes and eating fast cars. But then in comments you have a bunch of things that aren't the same construction. "both as mother and daughter" doesn't have the same issues because "daughter" can't work in that spot at all.

Is there faulty parallelism in this sentence? “The students rushed the field, they tore down the goalposts, and they started a bonfire party.” This is a question on a quiz I took, and the correct answer is apparently that there aren’t any grammatical errors, but I feel so very certain that it should read “the students rushed the field ...

Mar 31, 2019 · I agree with u/dude52760, but just want to point out that this isn't faulty parallelism (though parallelism is here). Technically, in and out are parallel, but they're just not the most precise words to use.

Apr 9, 2012 · So, yes, it's a faulty parallelism. (Gerund versus third-person plural.) The reason I believe you're having difficulty distinguishing is that "rather than" is a one-for-one clone of "instead of," with one grand exception: though "instead of" is also an adverb functionally, it contains "of" within it, a preposition.

Apr 28, 2021 · I’m not familiar with “misplaced participles” or “faulty parallelism.” This fits my definition of a dangling participle. “Wandering” should modify a person...but no person is mentioned in this sentence. It appears to modify daffodils...which is nonsense. Daffodils can’t wander. It’s not a run-on sentence.
