Feb 15, 2022 · This did a great job of removing graininess but the image was a little too soft in places so I duplicated it onto a new layer and sharpened it up using unsharp mask. I then masked the whole layer and only revealed the areas I wanted to be sharper, such as the horse head itself and the dark dust within the flame.

The horse-head is dark because it is an opaque dust cloud that lies in front of the bright red emission nebula, IC 434. The Flame Nebula (Sh2-277) is an orange-tinted nebula that contains filaments of dark dust.

Flame nebula is considerably brighter than the Horsehead, but it's still faint and still requires healthy aperture/magnification to see. Binoculars probably won't show it, but maybe from a very, very, very dark sky location you could see a small faint glow.
