    During the Second World War, Old Görlitz remained relatively unscathed from the bombing raids. Only the bridge across the river was destroyed. After the war, the Neisse river became the border with Poland and Görlitz became a neglected outpost at the edge of East Germany. Stalag 8A, a German POW camp, was located in Goerlitz (now called Zgorzelec). It was established in October 1939 to house Polish POWs taken during the German invasion.
