In the Middle Ages, allegorical interpretation was used by Christians to study the differences in the two Testaments ¹. Allegory is a narrative mode in which a series of abstract ideas are presented through concrete, realistic characters and situations operating within a literal plot that makes sense in and of itself ². Literary allegories typically describe situations and events or express abstract ideas in terms of material objects, persons, and actions ³. Medieval allegories were broken up into four categories of literal meaning, typological, tropological, and anagogical ⁴.
