Meter is comprised of a particular number of syllables found in a single line of poetry, and can be grouped into sets of two or three beats, also known as feet: units of stressed, also known as accented, and unstressed syllables. Each line of poetry has a number of feet, and meter refers to that number of feet used in a poetic line.

    Meter is the rhythm of the language in the poem; it is described by the number of feet in the poem. A foot is a part of a poetic line (1-3 syllables) with a certain stress pattern. We have to look at the verse and see which syllables are stressed, and which ones are unstressed.

    Metre, although often equated with rhythm, is perhaps more accurately described as one method of organizing a poem’s rhythm. Unlike rhythm, metre is not a requisite of poetry; it is, rather, an abstract organization of elements of stress, duration, or number of syllables per line into a specific formal pattern.
