Details of Runic alphabets, including Elder Futhark, Gothic Runes, Anglo-Saxon Futhorc and Younger Futhark

Anglo-Saxon runes are an extended version of Elder Futhark consisting of between 26 and 33 letters. It is thought that they were used to write Old English / Anglo-Saxon and Old Frisian from about the 5th century AD.

Younger Futhark was a Runic script used to write Old Norse, and was the main alphabet in Norway, Sweden and Denmark throughout the Viking Age, but was largely, though not completely, replaced by the Latin alphabet by about 1200 as a result of the conversion of most of Scandinavia to Christianity.

Old English / Anglo-Saxon was first written with a version of the Runic alphabet known as Anglo-Saxon or Anglo-Frisian runes, or futhorc/fuþorc. This alphabet was an extended version of Elder Futhark with between 26 and 33 letters.

Ogham (᚛ᚑᚌᚐᚋ᚜) Ogham is an alphabet that appears on monumental inscriptions dating from the 4th to the 6th century AD, and in manuscripts dating from the 6th to the 9th century. It was used mainly to write Primitive and Old Irish, and also to write Old Welsh, Pictish and Latin.

It is based on the Greek alphabet, with some extra letters from the Latin and Runic alphabets. The Goths were divided into two main tribes: the Ostrogothi or Greutungi (dune-dwellers) and the Visigothi or Tervingi (steppe-dwellers).

The Orkhon alphabet is thought to have been derived from or inspired by a non-cursive version of the Sogdian script. By the 9th century AD, the Orkhon and Yenisei alphabets were replaced by the Uighur alphabet, which developed from the cursive version of the Sogdian script.

The script is based on medieval runes, although vowels from Elder Futhark were added to be used for the letters á, é, í, ó, ú and ý in order to give a unique look to as many letters as possible.

Note: A runic alphabet called Dalecarlian Runes, or Dalrunor, was used in the Swedish province of Dalarna/Dalecarlia until the 20th century, mainly to write the Elfdalian language, which is closely related to Swedish. They could also be used to write Swedish.
