A sore throat or strep throat is a condition caused either by Streptococcus bacteria where there is irritation in the throat which leads to difficulty and pain while swallowing. It can also be caused by a virus, excess straining of the voice, or eating or drinking cold items. Strep throat infection is caused by the Group A Streptococcus Pyogenes bacteria. It is more common in the winter season. One acquires this by inhaling the respiratory droplets containing the bacteria that were spread in the air by talking, coughing, and sneezing by an already infected person. It also spreads by the transfer of bacteria from the hand to the nose or mouth after touching inanimate objects containing the bacteria. The prevention includes wearing masks and washing hands with sanitizer. If the strep throat is left untreated, the infected person would be contagious and can spread the infection to others for about 2 to 3 weeks. However, if the strep throat is treated with a course of antibiotics, then the person would be contagious for about 24 to 48 hours after receiving the treatment. Usually, sore throat would heal within a week, and for quick relief from sore throat caused by viral infections, no specific treatment is required other than salt water gargling, drinking warm water, plenty of fluids, taking lozenges for soothing relief, and vitamin C supplements for enhancing immunity. If the sore throat is still not relieved, then the doctor might prescribe an appropriate course of antibiotics.
