What is a zonal direction? The zonal direction often refers to the easterly or westerly component in an observed flow ( Figs. 1 and 2 ). Fig. 3 illustrates the zonal flow in the first 100 km of the atmosphere. Note the predominantly westerly systems in the troposphere, coupled in winter to a powerful flow in the stratosphere.
Which direction does a zonal wind change during the westward EEJ?During the westward EEJ, the average zonal wind shows a larger height variation with the wind being more eastward at ∼110 km and more westward at ∼140 km. Consistent results are obtained from the Swarm A/C and Swarm B data as well as from the data sorted for different local times and seasons.
Do eastward and westward EEJ velocities affect zonal wind profiles?Significant differences are found in the average zonal wind profiles between times of eastward and westward EEJ. The EEJ intensity correlates negatively ( R = −0.54) and positively ( R = 0.58) with the eastward wind velocities at ∼110 and ∼140 km, respectively.
Does the zonal wind change from east to West in EPB B1?The zonal wind was changing from east to west with time during the time period. For EPB b1, the whole structure is located in the region of weak westward zonal winds. It is more likely that westward zonal winds reduce the eastward drift velocity of b1.
