A CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the most important component of a computer system. It is the electronic circuitry that executes the instructions of a computer program by performing the basic arithmetic, logical, control and input/output operations2.

A CPU consists of three major units:

    • Memory or Storage Unit: This unit stores data, instructions, programs, and intermediate results. It also communicates with the input and output devices and other components of the computer system1.

    • Control Unit: This unit controls the flow of data within the CPU and between the CPU and other devices. It interprets the instructions of the program and coordinates the activities of the ALU and the memory unit1.

    • ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit): This unit performs arithmetic and logic operations on data. It can perform operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, comparison, etc1.

The following diagram shows a simplified representation of the CPU architecture:

    Source: [2]

The diagram shows how the CPU communicates with other components of the computer system through buses. A bus is a set of wires that carries data, address, or control signals. There are three types of buses:

    • Data Bus: This bus transfers data between the CPU and the memory or input/output devices.

    • Address Bus: This bus carries the address of the memory location or input/output device that the CPU wants to access.

    • Control Bus: This bus carries control signals that indicate the type of operation that the CPU wants to perform.

    Central processing unit - Wikipedia

A central processing unit (CPU), also called a central processor, main processor, or just processor, is the most important processor in a given computer. Its electronic circuitry executes instructions of a computer program, such as arithmetic, logic, controlling, and input/output (I/O) operations. This role contrasts … See more

Early computers such as the ENIAC had to be physically rewired to perform different tasks, which caused these machines to be called "fixed-program computers". The "central processing unit" term has been in use since as early … See more

When did a computer become a 'central processing unit'?The "central processing unit" term has been in use since as early as 1955. Since the term "CPU" is generally defined as a device for software (computer program) execution, the earliest devices that could rightly be called CPUs came with the advent of the stored-program computer .
What is a central processing unit (CPU)?central processing unit (CPU), principal part of any digital computer system, generally composed of the main memory, control unit, and arithmetic-logic unit. It constitutes the physical heart of the entire computer system; to it is linked various peripheral equipment, including input/output devices and auxiliary storage units.
What is a CPU & how does it work? The CPU is the hardware device in a computer that executes instructions from the software. Learn more about how it works, plus cores, clock speed, etc.
How does a CPU control unit work? The control unit performs this function at a rate determined by the clock speed and is responsible for directing the operations of the other units by using timing signals that extend throughout the CPU. Although the RAM, or main storage, is shown in this diagram and the next, it is not truly a part of the CPU.
